J. Wayne Baughman Music Director & Conductor

Nearly ten years ago J. Wayne Baughman began to dream of a first-class symphony orchestra as part of the cultural life of the growing Johns Creek community. Having observed the maturing performing arts activities of the area for nearly twenty years he felt the time was right to move forward with specific plans to establish a fully professional part-time orchestra. A “trial concert” was performed in December 2006 before an audience of 900 enthusiastic listeners and in April 2007 the Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra was incorporated as a Georgia Nonprofit Corporation.

Baughman’s training spans both choral and orchestral music disciplines. His principal conducting teachers were Kenneth Nielsen, Thomas Hilbish, Maynard Klein and Elizabeth A.H. Green. Baughman’s work as an orchestral conductor has included positions at the State University of New York - College at Cortland and Brevard Music Center. He is currently Music Director at St. Benedict Catholic Church (Johns Creek) and Principal Conductor of the Archdiocesan Festival Choir of Atlanta.

Well known to Atlanta area audiences as an outstanding vocalist, Baughman performed extensively for more than thirty years as bass soloist with every major performing arts organization including the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Choruses, Emory University Orchestra and Choruses, Atlanta Opera, Atlanta Virtuosi, the Metropolitan Opera Sampler and Cathedrals of Christ the King and St. Philip. He was a frequent choice as bass soloist in numerous performance projects with the late Robert Shaw including the 1991 Grammy-winning Telarc recording of Bernstein’s CHICHESTER PSALMS. Baughman worked with Maestro Shaw for nearly thirty years.

As Music Director and Conductor of Georgia’s newest professional orchestra in one of Georgia’s newest cities, Baughman is intent on establishing a “tradition of excellence” and a firm foundation for artistic growth.
